چکیده

Taxonomic notes: The African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer) exhibits substantial morphological variability (Skinner & Chimimba 2005), resulting in controversies regarding the recognition of the various subspecies (Smitz et al. 2013). Recent evidence supports the separation of two distinct groups, corresponding to a West and Central African group and an East and Southern African group (Smitz et al. 2013). The East and Southern African group is comprised of a single subspecies (Syncerus caffer caffer), which is found in the assessment region. The West and Central African group is assigned to two or three subspecies (S. c. nanus, S. c. brachyceros and S. c. aequinoctialis), although the latter two of these subspecies are not recognised by all authorities (Le Roex et al. 2012; Smitz et al. 2013). Gousiekte in African buffalo (Syncerus caffer).

Three African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) that died after capture and translocation from Mutirikwe Recreational Park in southern Zimbabwe showed macroscopic and microscopic lesions of cardiomyopathy compatible with a diagnosis of gousiekte. The buffalo had had access to Pavetta schumanniana, a plant that is known to cause gousiekte. Death was attributed to cardiac failure as a result of previous ...

Age determination of the West African buffalo Syncerus coffer brachyceros and the constancy of tooth wear

Maxillae of 34 West African buffalo Syncerus caffer brachyceros were collected from three sites in Burkina Faso, West Africa, and age determined from tooth appearance and the enamel height of Ml according to the criteria of Grimsdell (1973) for Ugandan buffalo Syncerus caffer caffer. Good agreement between the two methods was found. Ground and decalcified sections were prepared from M 1 and the...

Midazolam/ketamine induction and isoflurane maintenance of anaesthesia in a 2-month-old, hand-raised African buffalo (Syncerus caffer).

The use of a midazolam/ketamine combination for induction of anaesthesia in a 2-month-old, hand-raised buffalo calf (Syncerus caffer) is described to allow endotracheal intubation for the maintenance of anaesthesia with isoflurane and oxygen. Intraoperative complications were hypotension and hypothermia. For postoperative analgesia meloxicam and butorphanol was administered intramuscularly.

Novel SNP Discovery in African Buffalo, Syncerus caffer, Using High-Throughput Sequencing

The African buffalo, Syncerus caffer, is one of the most abundant and ecologically important species of megafauna in the savannah ecosystem. It is an important prey species, as well as a host for a vast array of nematodes, pathogens and infectious diseases, such as bovine tuberculosis and corridor disease. Large-scale SNP discovery in this species would greatly facilitate further research into ...
